Author Guidelines

Health, Culture and Society has ceased publication, and this site is no longer accepting submissions.

HCS adheres to a strict blind peer review process. Authors will be provided with full feedback following review and editorial decision. Articles are allocated specialist reviewers in line with the research topic.

Review time and current turnaround is 3 months.

Citation format must follow, as of November 2012, the APA citation style.

The last name of the author and the year of publication are inserted in the text at the appropriate point.

If the name of the author or the date appear as part of the narrative, cite only missing information in parentheses.

References should appear as footnotes.  The bibliography should appear at the end of the text, with full description of author, title, publisher, country and date of publication.

For all matters concerning English style, the journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style : http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/contents.html.

Authors should include a brief summary of their article in English and and the desired idiom of communication (no longer than 150 words), including a list of keywords (max. 5). These elements should appear at the beginning of the text, after the title of the paper, and before the introduction.Each author will also provide a separate file a brief bio-bibliographical note including institutional affiliation, role, main areas of research and most significant publications.

For bibliographical format, this too, must follow APA guidelines:

References cited in the text of a research paper must appear in a Reference List or bibliography. This list provides the information necessary to identify and retrieve each source.

• Order: Entries should be arranged in alphabetical order by authors' last names. Sources without authors are arranged alphabetically by title within the same list.
• Authors: Write out the last name and initials for all authors of a particular work. Use an ampersand (&) instead of the word "and" when listing multiple authors of a single work. e.g. Smith, J. D., & Jones, M.
• Titles: Capitalize only the first word of a title or subtitle, and any proper names that are part of a title.
• Pagination: Use the abbreviation p. or pp. to designate page numbers of articles from periodicals that do not use volume numbers, especially newspapers. These abbreviations are also used to designate pages in encyclopedia articles and chapters from edited books.
• Indentation*: The first line of the entry is flush with the left margin, and all subsequent lines are indented (5 to 7 spaces) to form a "hanging indent".
• Underlining vs. Italics*: It is appropriate to use italics instead of underlining for titles of books and journals.

Two additional pieces of information should be included for works accessed online.

• Internet Address**: A stable Internet address should be included and should direct the reader as close as possible to the actual work. If the work has a digital object identifier (DOI), use this. If there is no DOI or similar handle, use a stable URL. If the URL is not stable, as is often the case with online newspapers and some subscription-based databases, use the home page of the site you retrieved the work from.
• Date: If the work is a finalized version published and dated, as in the case of a journal article, the date within the main body of the citation is enough. However, if the work is not dated and/or is subject to change, as in the case of an online encyclopedia article, include the date that you retrieved the information.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
2. The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
7. The work is the original research of the author/s, and may undergo duplicity testing at any stage of the review/editing process in the interests of best practice

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

1. The Author retains copyright in the Work, where the term “Work” shall include all digital objects that may result in subsequent electronic publication or distribution.
2. Upon acceptance of the Work, the author shall grant to the Publisher the right of first publication of the Work.
3. The Author shall grant to the Publisher and its agents the nonexclusive perpetual right and license to publish, archive, and make accessible the Work in whole or in part in all forms of media now or hereafter known under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License or its equivalent, which, for the avoidance of doubt, allows others to copy, distribute, and transmit the Work under the following conditions:
   1. Attribution—other users must attribute the Work in the manner specified by the author as indicated on the journal Web site;

Any such posting made before acceptance and publication of the Work shall be updated upon publication to include a reference to the Publisher-assigned DOI (Digital Object Identifier) and a link to the online abstract for the final published Work in the Journal.
6. Upon Publisher’s request, the Author agrees to furnish promptly to Publisher, at the Author’s own expense, written evidence of the permissions, licenses, and consents for use of third-party material included within the Work, except as determined by Publisher to be covered by the principles of Fair Use.
7. The Author represents and warrants that:
   1. the Work is the Author’s original work;
   2. the Author has not transferred, and will not transfer, exclusive rights in the Work to any third party;
   3. the Work is not pending review or under consideration by another publisher;
   4. the Work has not previously been published;
   5. the Work contains no misrepresentation or infringement of the Work or property of other authors or third parties; and
   6. the Work contains no libel, invasion of privacy, or other unlawful matter.
8. The Author agrees to indemnify and hold Publisher harmless from Author’s breach of the representations and warranties contained in Paragraph 6 above, as well as any claim or proceeding relating to Publisher’s use and publication of any content contained in the Work, including third-party content.
